A Survey of Child Counselors¡¯ Ethical Judgment and Behavior in Situations Involving Ethical Dilemmas

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the child counselors¡¯ ethical judgment and experiences in hypothetical situations involving ethical dilemmas. 140 child counselors participated in a survey which explored their ethical judgment and experiences for 98 situations involving ethical dilemmas. These dilemmas related to clinical and boundary issues, confidentiality issues, professional relationship issues, client¡¯s right, distance counseling, virtual/online activities, professional competence issues and forensic issues. The results showed the there were major disagreements, and divergence child counselor opinions¡¯ in 46 of the situations involving ethical dilemmas. Moreover, among these 46 situations, discordance was observed in the ethical judgment and actual experiences of the child counselors were in 15 of the situations. Additionally, more than 50% of the child counselors had already actually experienced 11 out of the 15 different situations. The 11 situations were mainly discussed focusing on each ethical category. This study enhances our understating of the ethical judgment and experiences of the child counselors, and also highlights the importance of developing and implementing ethical guidelines, education, and training programs that are tailored to the needs of child counselors.
